On Wednesday February 23, Akron Soul Train, which offers one-month project residencies to artists in various disciplines, is opening a show called Black Joy by Adana Tillman. Her mixed-media show was put together using fabric, beading, embroidery and Black hair traditions, as well as an old school desk with added painting and carvings. She also interviewed Black men on creating rhythms on the desktop, and created dioramas showing the daily lives of her subjects.
As a preliminary tie-in to that show, Akron Soul Train is presenting a livestream on its Facebook page on Tuesday February 21, called “Fashion, Contemporary Art and the World In-Between.” In it, Assistant Curator of the Cleveland Museum of Art Darnell-Jamal Lisby will look at the rich history of Black fashion designers and how they’ve been influenced by contemporary art. Darnell-Jamal Lisby’s specialty is the history of fashion from the 15th century through today; his focused at CMA is to plan and organize fashion exhibitions.
Black Joy will be on view through Saturday April 2.
