A group of Cleveland west side Democratic ward clubs and ward leaders have kicked off a competition they’re calling “The Amazing Ballot Race,” intended to increase early voting turnout.
More than three hundred volunteers in wards 3, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 are working to provide information on getting a mail-in ballot and returning it properly in a timely manner — important information given that many are voting by mail for the first time and that misinformation is being widely spread, including from the White House.
They share that “Cuyahoga County has already set records on the number of vote-by-mail applications and weeks remain for residents to request a ballot to be sent to them. In Ward 17, for instance, more than 30% of all registered voters have requested to vote by mail. Even in wards where the numbers aren’t as high, they are still up significantly over the 2016 and 2018 elections. All told, there are thousands of voters who appear to be using the vote-by-mail system for the first time.”
Starting this week, volunteers will be dropping off information and reminders for voters in a safe and socially distanced manner, including 60,000 door hangers explaining how voters can track their ballots online at the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections, emphasizing the availability of a 24-hour ballot drop box at the BoE, and referring voters to the nonpartisan Voter Driver Cleveland if they need a ride. Weekly canvasses will continue throughout the month, focusing on voters whose ballots haven’t been returned yet.
If you’re interested in getting involved, there’s more information here about ways to do so.
