Fri 9/2 @ 6-9PM
Herb Ascherman has been one of Cleveland’s preeminent photographers for 40 years, wearing many hats. As a society photographer, he’s shot more than 1700 weddings, bar mitzvahs, family reunions and galas. As the director of a nonprofit gallery for 28 years he promoted the careers of other photographers and established a huge international network in the photographer community. As an art photographer, he has completed numerous serious of photos and shown at venues both in and outside northeast Ohio, and he has challenged himself by becoming one of the country’s most skilled practitioners of large-format platinum-print photography.
Although he’s still very active and pushing new boundaries, Heights Arts is presenting Herbert Ascherman Jr.: 40 Years, a retrospective of his work to date. It’s not strictly a retrospective in the sense that it doesn’t try to represent the various series, exhibitions and each aspect of his work. Rather, he went back through his negatives and discovered images that in most cases he’d never printed before to give a whole new perspective on how he sees and how he approaches his art.
The show, featuring 70 new prints, opens with a reception Fri 9/2 @ 6-9pm. It will be on view through Sat 10/15.
