Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s 1888 symphonic suite Scheherazade evokes the colorful culture and legend of the Middle East, exotic to a Russian like Rimsky-Korsakov. It’s based on the well-known stories of the Thousand and One Nights (Tales of the Arabian Nights), in which a sultan’s wife spins fantastic stories to beguole him into not putting her to death.
It’s the centerpiece of the upcoming Cleveland Orchestra concerts, conducted by incoming director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Gustavo Gimeno. It will be accompanied by Samuel Barber’s Overture to The School for Scandal and Argentine composer Alberto Ginastera’s Concerto No. 2 with the orchestra’s principal cellist Mark Kosower in the solo role. (The Ginastera will be performed only at the evening concerts.
Tickets are $21-$165.
