Cleveland-based Brazilian jazz guitarist/vocalist Moises Borges is staying busy, offering to play concerts on people’s lawns. He’s also come up with a useful twist on the drive-in concerts musicians are doing this summer.
He’ll share a bill with Akron’s zydeco-based party band Mo’Mojo in the parking lot of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Shaker Heights, as they perform to raise money for their sidelined sidemen. He explains, “The goal of this project is to financially support the musicians, focused on the side musician, like a drummer, a bass player, etc, the ones that can not do a live show by themselves. Main act musicians might have a easier time getting by during the Covid-19 time, although a side man will have a harder time surviving or playing alone.”
Both Borges and Mo’Mojo will perform hour-and-a-half, full-band sets. Borges’ band will include three horns as they perform a set a Brazilian jazz, samba and other uptempo rhythms, while Mo’Mojo will play their lively mix of zydeco, Cajun, blues, R&B, reggae and rock & roll featuring horns, washboard, button-box accordion and traditional rock instruments.
The show is by donation as part of an ioby campaign where donations are doubled by the Cuyahoga Arts & Culture Match Fund. Cars will be parked in every other space, and people are asked to stay in their cars.
