A Christmas Day tradition returns to the Beachland Ballroom after two dark years: Blue Lunch’s 13th annual Xmas Night Latke Party. The idea is to give those who are Jewish or otherwise non-Christian something to do on a day they don’t celebrate. Latkes are the potato pancakes traditionally served on Hanukkah.
And seven-man Blue Lunch knows how to get a party started with their jump blues/swing/rock/R&B sound, driven by a blaze of horns. And as usual, they’re bringing along some special guests to add to the already high energy level: two topnotch Midwestern harpist/vocalists Hank Mowery and Tom Moore. While Michigan native Mowery, who’s been leading his band the Hawktones since the mid 90s (not quite as long as Blue Lunch has been together!), will be making his debut with Blue Lunch, Moore has played previous latke parties as well as other shows with the band.
Doors open at 6:30, with DJ Pete London spinning vinyl blues, soul and R&B. Blue Lunch takes the stages at 7:0. The Beachland’s usual menu will be expanded to include latkes.
Tickets are $15 in advance, $18 at the door.
