There’ve been a lot of stories in the news recently about the struggles of contemporary teenagers, especially young women. With all the changes they’re going through, these have always been fraught years, filled with emotional swings. But modern technology and communication advances such as social media have put teens under pressure almost nonstop with predictably complicated outcomes to their mental health.
Shaker Heights-based author and clinical psychologist Lisa Damour has written several books about the stress adolescent girls are under. Both Untangled (2016) and Under Pressure (2019) were best sellers. Her third book, The Emotional Lives of Teenagers: Raising Connected, Capable, and Compassionate Adolescents, has just been published.
She’ll talk about the book at Case Western Reserve University where she works with the Schubert Center for Child Studies. She’ll also be in conversation with Habeebah R. Grimes, chief executive officer of Positive Education Program.
It takes place in CWRU’s Thwing Ballroom as part of the ongoing Cleveland Humanities Festival. It’s free and open to all. Go here for more information and to register.
