No one was impacted by the long pandemic shutdown more than small theaters which mostly couldn’t perform outdoors and had no means to social distance their audiences. So we’re really excited to see them coming back.
Cleveland Heights-based Dobama Theatre reopens after a dark year-and-a-half with a production that sounds entertaining and less heavy than some of the thought-provoking works they do. That play, Chelsea Marcantel’s Airness, is described as “a play about air guitar that will rock your world.” In it, a woman named Nina (played by Cleveland actress Mariah Burks, familiar to audiences of the Cleveland Play House and also Dobama’s director of engagement) enters her first air guitar contest, thinking it’ll be a piece of cake. She quickly learns the depth of commitment competitors have and how connected they are to the music they’re “pretending” to play.
Dobama’s artistic director Nathan Motto directs the production which runs 105 minutes with no intermission and is described in many reviews as a fun evening. The play debuted at the Humana festival in 2017; this production, which runs through Sunday November 21, will be its regional premiere.
