Celebrate the Full Moon with an Author Reading and Tarot Event in Cleveland Heights

Tue 4/23 @ 7PM

April’s full moon takes place on April 23. It’s known as the “Pink Moon,” named after a pink flower that commonly blooms at this time of year. Mac’s Backs on Coventry and its neighborhood across the street, makers’ store Made Cleveland, will mark the occasion with art, Tarot, and a short reading and book signing by author Claire McMillan, whose 2023 book Alchemy of a Blackbird, was inspired by the Tarot. The book revolves around early 20th-century Spanish painter Remedios Varo, who fled to Mexico during World War II where the joined an expatriate artist community.  Tarot was one of the inspirations for her surrealist-style art which explored mysticism, romance and the subconscious, especially as they pertained to women. (The Art Institute of Chicago did a stunning exhibition of her work last year called Science Fictions.) Also playing a role in the story is Varo’s fellow Mexican expatriate and surreal painter, Leonora Carrington.

McMillan, a Californian whose previous books include Gilded Age (set in Cleveland) and The Necklace, is a former lawyer who decided to re-invent herself as a writer and now lives on her husband’s family farm outside Cleveland, according to her bio.

The event takes place on Tuesday, April 23rd at Made Cleveland. It’s free and open to the public.
