Historian Talks About a Northeast Ohio Legend at Kent Brewery

Tue 1/17 @ 7PM

History isn’t an inarguable set of facts, an unchanging truth. It’s rife with diverging viewpoints, promotion of one group over another, exaggerated heroics, myth and legends that become accepted as fact over the years.

Brady’s Leap is a landmark in Kent by the Cuyahoga River. Supposedly, Captain Samuel Brady (who crossed the Delaware with George Washington among other things. Supposedly) jumped into the river while being chased by Indians he’d ambushed (he was not their friend!) and hid underwater in a nearby lake, surviving by breathing through a reed.

Did that happen? Northeastern Ohio historian Brad Bolton, whose specialty is Canal Era history, says, “It’s complicated. We can’t know if Brady’s feats actually happened, but there is evidence for some of his escapades.”

Bolton will tell more at Kent’s North Water Brewing’s Tap Talks this month. Grab an artisan beer and enjoy the stories, learning what we know — and what is lost in the shrouds of time. The program is free.
