Akron Civic Theatre Presents “Guys and Dolls” with Older Cast

Fri 5/5-Sat 5/20

BOOM! Theater was co-founded in 2021 by two members of the Akron Civic Theatre’s staff, Val Renner and Lisa Martinez, to stage musicals with casts and crews primarily over the age of 50, although the productions are intended for all ages.

Its next production is the musical theater classic, Guys and Dolls, which debuted on Broadway in 1950 and won the Tony for Best Musical in 1951. It went on to become a 1955 film starring Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra and Jean Simmons in the story about a professional gambler and craps game organizer whose nightclub singer fiancée wants him to go straight and marry her (after 14 years!), as he tries to win money to keep his game going and duck cops and a mobster.

Frank Loesser wrote songs (music and lyrics), which include “Luck Be a Lady Tonight, “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat,”” and “A Bushel and a Peck.”

Performances take place Friday and Saturday through May 20 at the Akron Civic Theatre’s Knight Stage. Get tickets at AkronCivic.com.
