Steven Banks, an assistant professor of saxophone at Ithaca College in New York, is one of a small number of musicians using this modern instrument in a classical music context. Previously on the faculty of Baldwin Wallace University, he’s also made numerous appearances with the Cleveland Orchestra. And as a young, black musician, he’s been an outspoken advocate for diversity in classical music.
Banks will be the guest of the Rocky River Chamber Music Society for its next concert — still virtual, alas — where he’ll cross generations to partner with pianist Xak Bjerken to perform a series of duet, including works by Mozart and Schumann that have been re-arranged for saxophone as well as contemporary pieces written for the instrument by Carlos Simon, Saad Haddid and Banks himself. They’ll perform at RRCMS’s usual venue, the acoustically outstanding West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church, while you the audience while be in your home.
The concert is free, as all RRCMS concerts are, although they hope you’ll consider making a donation. You can access the concert here and here.
