Tue 7/19 @ noon
The City Club’s series of free lunchtime forums at Public Square continues with a topic that should interest those who long for more coverage of civic and community affairs in a parched environment for such coverage.
“New Voices in Nonprofit Journalism” looks at a new model being rolled out around the country to keep on eye issues and activities that impact quality of life in communities while the daily papers, such as still exist, devote saturation coverage to professional team sports, which gets clicks.
A few years ago, City Bureau opened Cleveland Documenters, which hires citizens to attend public meetings and post reports in real time to Twitter. This year, the American Journalism Project started the Ohio Local News Initiative with a Cleveland newsroom and The Marshall Project, focused on the criminal justice system, opened its first local newsroom in Cleveland.
The forum will feature panelist Jim Crutchfield, former president/publisher of the Akron Beacon Journal and now editor-in-chief for the Marshall Project’s Cleveland newsroom, and Lila Mills,editor-in-chief for the Ohio Local News Initiative.
The forum will be livestreamed starting at noon. You can tweet questions to @TheCityClub or text 330.541.5794. In case of rain, the forum moves to Old Stone Church on Public Square.
