Like many young contemporary musicians, Columbus, Ohio-bred pianist Aaron Diehl doesn’t draw a line between classical music and jazz. As a teenager his talents attracted the attention of Jazz at Lincoln Center director Wynton Marsalis who invited him to join his group on a European tour. Since then the 38-year-old musician has performed music by jazz masters such as Mary Lou Williams and Duke Ellington as well as by Bach, and played with many of the country’s top orchestras including the Cleveland Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the San Francisco Symphony.
When he performed at Akron’s E.J. Thomas Hall in a concert presented by the Tuesday Musical Association, he’ll first appear on stage alone, playing his Hidden Visionaries program of music by Black American composers including Ellington, William Grant Still and Margaret Bonds. Then he’ll be joined by the Aaron Diehl Trio to cut loose and play some jazz.
