Kent State University is known for its fashion design and merchandising program and the exhibits in its museum often reflect its strengths in that area. So starting this week, it will be hosting the first U.S. show of work by 2023 KSU School of Design and Fashion Merchandising Hall of inductee Omar Salam for his Sukeina brand.
His family was originally from the West African country of Senegal, but Salam grew up in Europe before moving to New York City to attend Parsons School of Designwhere he earned a degree in fashion. His early interest in film fell by the wayside as he built a successful career in fashion, first working for Sonia Rykiel in Paris and New York, followed by a stint with Christian Lacroix. He started Sukeina in 2012, designing vivid garments with clean lines and interesting, textured details such as silk fringe, lace and mesh. The KSU show will feature pieces from several of his collections including Rise, Hue, Miracle, Bloom and Cardinal.
The show will be on view through Sunday June 6. Get more information here.
