MLK Day Program Explores Environmental Justice and Equity

Mon 1/15 @ 11AM-12:30PM

It’s not something people usually associate with him, but Dr. Martin Luther King Jr was, among other things, a climate activist. He saw the connection between environmental justice and all the other types of justice and quality he fought for; that poor people and people of color were the main victims of pollution; when he went to Memphis in 1968 to stand with the sanitation workers (and was assassinated) he was pointing out, among other things, that these low-paid workers were being asked to handle toxic substances with ruinous impacts to their health.

Summit Metro Parks is celebrating MLK Day by spotlighting this aspect of “justice for all,” with a program called “Environmental Justice and Equity.” It will look at how the fight for justice affects the people, green spaces and policies of Northeast Ohio. It takes place at Goodyear Lodge at Goodyear Heights Metro Park. It’s free and open to all.
