City Club Free Outdoor Forum Looks at West Side Market’s Future

Wed 7/10 @ noon-1PM

Once again, the City Club is hosting a series of free outdoor lunchtime forums, starting this week, but at a different location. Instead of Public Square, they’ll take place at the PlayhousevSquare Plaza at East 14th and Euclid.

Welcome starts at 11:45 and the program begins at noon. The first topic is “The New Nonprofit Management of the West Side Market,” with ideastream’s Mike McIntyre in conversation with the nonprofit market’s first executive director Rosemary Mudry who took the job in November of 2023.

It’s no secret that the landmark more-than-100-year-old market has faced problems in recent years and lots of opinions have been expressed about what its future should look like. Clearly it’s no longer the 1920s when neighborhood women in babushkas took trolleys and pushed baby strollers to the market to stock up on kielbasa, sauerkraut and pumpernickel. But Clevelanders have resisted the pendulum swinging too far the other way to create a “festival market” filled with upscale eateries and quaint little gift shops. The market clearly needs to be spruced up and provide more amenities. But what and how? Come hear from Mudry (whose resume includes work with several Cleveland development corporations, including Ohio City, Kamm’s Corners and Old Brooklyn) and share your thoughts and ideas. We know she’s going to hear about the shifting and off-putting changes in parking!

Registration isn’t required but will help them plan. Go here. The program will also be livestreamed at the City Club’s website, If you have questions text 330-541-5794. In case of rain, the program will take place inside the City Club just across the street.
