Foothill Galleries in Cleveland Heights, which specializes in fine-arts photography, presents the work of Lauren Davies in a series called Isolated Objects.
In it Davies explores a location that’s long been a site of fascination for artists, historians, storytellers, ghosthunters and the just plain nosy: The Mansfield Reformatory. Opened in 1886, it gradually declined over the years until overcrowding, violence and miserable conditions led to its closing in 1990. Since then it’s hosted tours and special events, even a music festival. Famously, scenes from the 1994 film The Shawshank Redemption were filmed there
Davies’ images focus on isolated objects found onsite such as broken bunk beds and chairs and plastic flowers in the warden’s former office. She turns her photos into digitally woven tapestry images which she reworks with hand dyeing, sewing, cutting, collaging and unraveling threads.
The show opens on Wednesday October 25.
