Les Delices Opens New Season of Its Online SalonEra Series

Mon 10/3 @ 7:30PM

One of the most creative area music ensembles, as far as coming up with new ways to present and promote their music, is baroque chamber orchestra Les Delices. Their fully staged production, The White Cat, was one of the highlights of last season.)

One of their pandemic innovations, which they’re continuing, is their bi-weekly online series SalonEra. Each hour-long episode offered both new and archival performances, surrounded by illuminating short discussions by experts and artists, grouped around a particular theme: a great introduction to the music for those who might not be steeped in it.

They’re continuing the series post-pandemic. It kicks off this week with “Musicians of the Ospedali.” “In the 18th century, the orphaned girls of the Ospedali were unlikely stars in the rich musical firmament of Venice,” they explain. “And yet, tourists and luminaries alike crowded into their concerts, with writers like Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Charles Burney remarking on their sophisticated and touching performances.”

Baritone/scholar Lisandro Abadie will lead listeners through the story of their music, amplified by archival performances including an all-woman rendition of Vivaldi’s Gloria from Early Music Vancouver.

There’s a $15 suggested donation, and all episodes will be available for free streaming online from their first airing through June 30, 2023.
