Sun 11/6 @ 1-5PM
Part two of SPACES’ “Monster” weekend is its Monster Drawing Rally, now back after three and a half years. (It was formerly held in the early spring and was scheduled for its 2020 iteration just days after COVID shut everything down)
SPACES main gallery is filled with artists, working in three hour-long shifts to create art on the spot. As they finish each piece, volunteers hang it on the wall and visitors dash to claim the pieces they’d like to buy — everything is one price and the fastest claimant gets the piece. People kibbitz their favorite artists so they can get there as soon as a piece goes up.
While SPACES provides paper and drawing tools for those who just want to, well, draw, artists often push the boundaries of what “drawing” means and bring their own materials, tools and equipment. We’ve seen ceramicist Angelica Pozo, who’ll be back doing the 1pm shift, bringing tiles, smashing them into pieces with a hammer and reassembling them to create her works. We have no idea what we’re likely to see Robin VanLear, the mastermind behind the giant Parade the Circle puppets, do (she’s also at 1pm). We’ve seen collagists and photographers and others create non-drawing work on the spot.
Each shift (1-2pm, 2:30, 3:30pm, 4-5pm) features as many as 30 artists, a mix of established local art stars, rising young creators, art students and self-appointed artists-for-a-day just having fun.
The low-dough family-friendly event also features laser tag in the Lab and Mitchell’s ice cream dishing out scoops of vanilla, vegan chocolate and blue cosmo ice cream. And the raffle from last night’s benefit continues from 1-6pm today. Admission is just $10.
