Les Delices Tackles the Orpheus Myth in Music

Fri 3/8 @ 7:30PM

Sat 3/9 @ 7:30PM

Sun 3/10 @ 4PM

In Greek myth, Orpheus was a poet and musician, best known for the story of how he descended to hell to retrieve his wife Eurydice and then lost her again. That tale has inspired hundreds of poems, novels, operas, plays, ballets, movies and musical compositions. Baz Luhrman’s film Moulin Rouge and the musical Hadestown are both rooted in that story.

Now Cleveland chamber ensemble Les Delices is presenting Song of Orpheus, an evening of music inspired by the Orpheus myth. French mezzo-soprano Sophie Michaux and American bass-baritone/composer Jonathan Woody will join the ensemble to perform cantatas by Jean-Philippe Rameau and Philippe Courbois, as well as excerpt’s from Georg Philipp Teleman’s obscure opera Orpheus. Woody contributes the premiere performance of his own trio sonata By much love betray’d commissioned by Les Délices that tells that story and as well as the many other legends about Orpheus’ life.

Oboist Debra Nagy, Les Delices’ founder, will direct the program, with violinist Shelby Yamin, viola de gamba player Rebecca Landell and harpsichordist Mark Edwards also supporting the singers. They’ll perform at Akron Civic Theatre’s Knight Stage on Friday March 8, at the Pivot Center in Ohio City on Saturday March 9, and at Disciples Christian Church in Cleveland Heights on Sunday March 10.
