The Cleveland Jazz Orchestra is wrapping up its 39th season of concerts this weekend with a special guest musician: bassist/vocalist/composer Richard Bona. They’ve dubbed the one-night-only performance at the Maltz Performing Arts Center “Bonafide Genius” in his honor.
The Cameroon native first learned to play many instruments, write music and even build his own instruments in his village before moving to Germany, Paris and then to New York City (where he’s now based) to take advantage of greater educational and performance opportunities.
Inspired by Jaco Pastorius, he ended up focusing on bass as his primary instrument, performing with artists such as Harry Belafonte, Bobby McFerrin, Larry Coryell, George Benson, Pat Metheny and Chaka Khan. He’s also released more than a dozen albums as band leader, and countless others as a sideman and collaborator.
