Akron Art Museum Opens Two New Shows

Sat 10/2

For those on a school-year calendar — or an arts season calendar — fall is a time of new beginnings. So it is with the Akron Art Museum, which debuts two new shows on Saturday October 2.

Afterimages: Geometric Abstraction and Perception, in the Karl and Bertl Arnstein Galleries, looks at a form of abstraction that took holds in the ”60s and ’70s, commonly associated with op art: strong colors, repeated patterns and afterimages. Many of these works were based on scientific and mathematical principles, but they often suggested a mystical visual world beyond the reach of science. The show will be on view through Sunday January 9, 2022.

More Is More: Visual Richness in Contemporary Art, in the Judith Bear Isroff Gallery, is describe as aiming to “delight our visitors, rewarding those who observe closely and look again. Enjoy the rich patterning, ornate surfaces, and surprising details.” In it, they tell us, the artists will “add unexpected twists to historical styles and techniques.” It’ll be hung salon-style, meaning works crowded on the walls from floor to ceiling, giving visitors a sense of visual overload. More is more indeed! It’s on view through Sunday March 27, 2022.
