There are lots of options to go out and hear outstanding local bands and musicians over the holidays. Since acts like to stay close to home or go home be with family, clubs empty out of touring acts and fill up with local bills and returning prodigals playing a hometown gig while visiting.

Tonight at the Grog Shop at “Northcoast Christmas,” you can check out one of the area’s most appealing younger bands, the Modern Electric. The quartet calls its music “cinematic pop,” which hints at its ambitious scope, sweeping melodies and exquisite tonal colors. Frontman Garrett Komyati’s crisp voice and lush keyboards help give the band its distinctive sound but bassist Matthew Childers, drummer Michael O’Brien and guitarist Holden Laurence definitely do their part. And while the band is relatively young in years, they’re old in experience: they’ve been together, incredibly, since winning third palce in the 2008 High School Rock Off.

Stretching the definition of “Northcoast” quite a bit, energetic indie rock trio Nick D & the Believers will be heading up I-71 from Columbus to join the bill. It’s rounded out by raucous garage rock seven-piece from Cleveland, the Teddy Boys.

Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door.
