Come Dance to the Music at Lake View Cemetery

Sun 6/25 @ 4-6PM

It’s counterintuitive to think that one of the summer’s most appealing free outdoor concert series takes place in a cemetery. But for several summers now, Lake View Cemetery, on the Cleveland Heights/Cleveland/East Cleveland border, has been hosting an outdoor party on the sweeping lawn of the Garfield Memorial where our 20th president is buried.

There you can bring lawn chairs and a blanket, along with a picnic basket, and enjoy music by local bands on six alternate Sundays (the rain date in each case is the following Sunday). It starts this week with one of the area’s best known Latin artists, percussionist/vocalist Sammy DeLeon, whose Latin Jazz ensemble carries Puerto Rican-style music well beyond that culture’s west side enclave, drawing on other Latin music sounds as well. The result is exceedingly infectious, and will have folks dancing all over that hillside.

The rest of the series includes Beatles/classic rock band Mike, Jim & Bill (7/9); swing jazz ensemble Red Light Roxy (7/23), horn-driven blues/swing/jump group Blue Lunch (8/6), old-time gypsy jazz/swing ensemble Hot Djang (8/20) and the soft soul sounds of Hubb’s Groove (9/10).

I have recently become leader of the Night Owls, a ten piece band that plays authentic arrangements from the Roaring Twenties. Our playlist includes charlestons, novelty tunes and jazz classics of the era. We would be very interested in performing on your series next summer. You can contact me by email or phone (216) 765-0754 or (216) 401-8444. I would be happy to answer any questions you have.
