Northeast Ohio jazz/world music percussionist Jamey Haddad’s reputation is worldwide: He’s been in Paul Simon’s touring band for decades.
The Cleveland native, whose interest in international rhythms is lifelong, left Cleveland to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston (where he later became a professor), then moved to New York where he built a flourishing career, playing on hundreds of albums in addition to being a mainstay in Simon’s band.
After 30 years on the East Coast, he moved back to Cleveland 20 years ago to join the Oberlin Conservatory faculty teaching percussion and improvisation. That means people here are fortunate enough to be able to see him perform relatively often.
This weekend he’ll be back at the BOP STOP to celebrate his 70th birthday with a pair of shows where he’ll perform with two different ensembles, along with some special guests. One of the groups is his band Under One Sun, featuring pianist Leo Blanco, sax player Billy Drewes, bassist Roberto Occhipinti and accordionist Michael Ward-Bergeman; the other is a quintet that includes, in addition to Haddad, pianist Alain Mallet, bassist Kip Reed, percussionist Patrick Graney and sax player Chris Coles.
Tickets are $25 to be in the room, but you can also listen virtually at the BOP STOP’s Facebook page for free and make a donation here if you like what you hear.
