Art Openings, Guest Vendors & Musicians Liven 78th Street Studios’ Third Friday

From CHOD & friends’ “Low Epectations”

Fri 5/19 @ 5-9PM

Third Friday at 78th Street Studios will brimming with activity this month as several new shows are unveiled. Painter Justin Brennan, whose tiny studio is located on the building’s top floor, will be showing the work in the more spacious surroundings of the second floor HEDGE gallery.

Then down on the main floor, the pop-oriented E11even2 Gallery will be opening Low Expectations, featuring the work of artist CHOD and friends, for which CHOD created more than 20 pieces featuring pop culture characters and invited 17 friends to contribute one-two pieces each. “The object is to bring JOY to the artists in creating these pieces and to the viewing public in experiencing them,” he says.

Also opening on the main floor at Gallery 202 is Facial Recognition featuring the work of Michael High, Will Chatlosh and Barbara Martin.

Then make your way down to ARTneo on the RAMP level to get a look at their new show A Sweet and Sour Journey with Elmer W. Brown and Langston Hughes. It features images drawn by Karamu House artists Elmer W. Brown for a 1930s children book by his colleague Langston Hughes called The Sweet and Sour Animal Book, which was unpublished until the 1990s, years after Hughes’ death.

“Knowledge of the collaboration between Brown and Hughes was largely unknown until now,” says the ARTneo release. “This will be the first time that the original text and images will be shown together.”

As usual BARneo will be providing drinks for sale across the way to support their nonprofit mission of collecting and sharing northeast Ohio art history, and Local West will be selling for on the ground floor. Northcoast Promotions will have their usual array of artists, craftspeople, artisans and local makers in the smARTspace and in the RAMP level open space. DJ LaCroy Hatcher aka DJ Sunset will be spinning tunes in the SmARTspace as well.

Classical guitarist Scott Schlegel and bluegrass/roots music quartet Brand New Hat will be providing music elsewhere in the building.

Third Friday is free and open to all, including children and well-behaved dogs.
