Noted local painter Nikki Woods is ready to drop her latest body of work, opening this week at HEDGE Gallery, which represents her. Her solo show of recent oil paintings and pastels is called Conjuring Images whose underlying inspiration was art history, vintage Hollywood film stills, and “whimsical creatures,” all part of her collection of images. “Woods masterfully weaves her spectral high-femme visions with sensuous oil painting to connect the past and present simultaneously,” the show’s press release tells us. “Her lush, gestural paintings, though playful and riotous, explore complex ideas relating to the practice of painting, magic, feminine interiority, and what is considered ‘serious’ content.”
“I use color, gesture and form to communicate a sense of directness and urgency and see painting as a practice of divination or mediumship, outside of time,” the artist adds. “Like reading a crystal ball—an image emerges from the canvas.”
Adding another dimension to the show, Woods will be collaborating with two fellow painters, Bianca Fields and Katy Richards, on a group of paintings called Dream Gardens, using floral still life painting as their basis. It will be a show-within-a-show at HEDGE when Woods’ show opens.
Come to a preview on Wednesday July 17 @ 5pm if you like to contemplate art work at leisure or come to the official opening on Third Friday July 19 if you like the hustle and bustle of a big art event. Woods will do an artist talk at the gallery on Wednesday August 21 @ 5:30-7:30pm. The show will be on view through August 31.
