One of Maelstrom Collaborative Arts’ signature events is its Bricolage series, where, every couple of months, a group of artists who cross disciplines, get together to produce new works that challenges the boundaries of their genres.
Currently, these artists are not able to get in the same room to collaborate and then to show what they’ve come up with to an audience. So MCA has rethought Bricolage, and come up with a virtual version which includes interactive elements.
“Moving from a physical, live performance model to something online is a very unique challenge for us,” says MCA executive artistic director Jeremy Paul. “On the other hand, as a company dedicated to the intersections between different arts, we’re seeing this as an opportunity to translate our approach into a new kind of online experience, something that moves beyond live streaming.”
As with live Bricolage, pairs of artists have six weeks to create a hybrid work, which intertwines what each one does on their own. They’ve been doing this now, while not meeting face-to-face. The theme of this edition of Bricolage is “Escape.” Bricolage producer Devin Hinzo says, “Because of everything that’s happening right now, we are using ‘Escape’ as the theme for all the artists to respond to — escaping a place you can’t leave, escaping reality, this political moment, all of this online content, and so on.”
Participating artists are painter/performance artist Courtney D. Love and photographer/Zygote Press co-director Stephanie Kluk; vocalist Naomi Columna and performance artist Kayli Salzano; and visual artist Celena Higginbottom and musician/performance artist Christine Lewis.
The result will be posted on Maelstrom’s website. There’ll be a live streamed introduction at 7pm Saturday June 27, with the performances starting at 7:30. They can be accessed any time after that through Sunday July 5. It’s pay what you can.
