Once again this week the Cleveland Orchestra, under the baton of Russian-born conductor Semyon Bychkov, presents a program that swings from the soothing sounds of an ultra-familiar piece to the challenges of the brand-new and less familiar.
The headlining piece of the two evenings is Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture. But they open with the U.S. premiere 56-year-old British composer Julian Anderson’s Symphony No. 2 (“Prague Panoramas”), a work co-commissioned by the Cleveland Orchestra. And in between the audience will be treated to a performance by sister pianists Katia and Marielle Labèque in Concerto for Two Pianos by Bohuslav Jan Martinů, an early 20th-century Czech composer noted for his works for piano.
(Rounding out the Czech theme, Bychkov, who is married to Marielle Labèque, is currently artistic director and chief conductor for the Czech Philharmonic in Prague.)
