Now in its 12th year, Kurentovanje, based on a traditional Slovenian festival, keeps growing. It drew a huge crowd to the area around the National Slovenian Home at East 65th and St. Clair. The event kicks off with a parade down St. Clair featuring community organizations such as City Dogs and Slow Roll Cleveland, ethnic groups and always a flat bed with a polka band (this year there were two). Finally, the Kurenti arrive bringing up the rear, dressed in furry suits, clanging giant bells to chase away the winter, posing for countless selfies.
After the parade, the fun shifts to the Slovenian Home where there’s food, drink, music and dancing both inside and out, with four stages of music (lots of polka, but rock & roll as well), vendors and a basement filled with activities for kids (who could also indulge in crafts at Upcycle Parts next door). Predicted rain never came and eventually the sun broke through, making for a perfect day.
