South African Gospel Group Performs Program in Akron Dedicated to Civil Rights

Sun 11/27 @ 7:30PM

(Postponed from 10/2)

South Africa’s Soweto Gospel Choir was formed in 2002 to perform a distinctive take on gospel music, which includes American gospel, pop music, Jamaican reggae and African music among the strands it weaves together. They perform a cappella, using costuming, percussion and dance to enhance their performances. They also sing in six of South Africa’s native languages.

When they perform at Akron’s E.J. Thomas Hall presented by the Tuesday Musical Association, they’ll be doing an all-new concert called “HOPE — It’s Been a Long Time Coming,” a tribute to the fight for civil rights, both in South African and the U.S.

They tell us the show will open with a set of South African freedom songs “inspired by their Rainbow Nation,” followed by songs from the U.S. Civil Rights Movement, which includes song by artists such as Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke and Aretha Franklin.
