While jazz trumpet player Dominick Farinacci’s career has taken him around the world since he left Cleveland to go to school at New York’s Juilliard School (where he was a member of the first jazz music class, on the recommendation of Wynton Marsalis), he’s never forgotten his roots as a member of the Tri-C High School Jazz All-Stars. He’s often returned to town, not only to play, but to mentor young musicians in workshops, camps and classes such as the Tri-C JazzFest Academy program which he directs. When the kids perform at JazzFest you’ll find him at the side of the stage, offering encouragement and sometimes playing along.
He’ll be doing some of that in the next two months with a pair of shows by Dominick Farinacci & Spirit of the Groove. The latter is a group of nine young musicians from area high schools who have committed to full-time pursuit of jazz in college, part of an invitational mentorship program that blends classroom work with live playing experience. You can share the experience, and hear one of Cleveland’s biggest jazz stars alongside potential stars of the future, at Ohio City’s Market Garden Brewery. Tickets are $20.
