Maybe you’re missing the fun of those summer farmers market, browsing all the locally grown and produced offerings and chatting with the farmers and food makers.
While you won’t find the copious piles of tomatoes, peppers, berries, zucchini and peaches at this time of year, there are several year-round farmers markets that offer greenhouse-grown greens, long-storing crops such as onions, winter squash and carrots, and food products such as maple syrup, salsa and salad dressings.
North Union Farmers Markets two flagship markets pick up on January 8 where they left off in December, only with indoor locations. The Crocker Park market moves inside at Crocker Park, while the Shaker Square market moves east to the Van Aken District Market Hall. Both run Saturday mornings @ 9am-noon. Get details here.
Out in Bath, the Countryside Farmers Market starts its year at the Old Trail Schoolhouse, where it will hold biweekly markets through the end of April. There are 15-16 regular vendors who’ll be there each week and another two dozen on a rotating basis, offering meat, pasta, teas, baked goods, jams, honey and more. Many also provide curbside pickup. And on the first Saturday of each month, Chase the Flavor will be hosting a cooking demo. Masks required! Get updates here.
And the year-round Coit Road Farmers Market soldiers away in its own dedicated building in East Cleveland, every Saturday morning @ 8am-1pm. Find wintery items such as jams and jellies, and lots of baked goods. And check out market manager Kevin Scheuring’s stash of affordable kitchen knives for sale if you’re planning to spend the winter hunkered down in the kitchen. (He demonstrates how to choose and use them too). He also does a chef’s demo with some hearty cold-weather foods coming up; this week he’s going full Cleveland with a pierogi demo. Lots of meat coming up the rest of the month. Fellow vegetarians, be warned! Here’s the schedule.
