Jazz/global music drummer/percussionist Jamey Haddad is one of those musical treasures we’re lucky to have in northeast Ohio. He became interested in percussion instruments from around the world as a child growing up in Cleveland, then left the area to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston (where he later became a professor). He ultimately settled in New York to built a career that has included several decades as a member of Paul Simon’s touring band and playing on hundreds of albums by an array of musicians in a variety of genres, from Yo-Yo Ma to Sting to fellow Cleveland native Joe Lovano.
We got him back the early ’00s when he returned to join the faculty at Oberlin Conservatory, while continuing his international career as well as collaborating with some of this area’s world-class jazz musicians. He’s been an active part of the area music scene.
This week the Jamey Haddad Quartet, which features three of the area’s other outstanding players — saxophonist Bobby Selvaggio, bassist Kip Reed and guitarist Joban Ferguson — will play three shows in which they’ll celebrate the music of the influential jazz pianist/composer Keith Jarrett. They’ll play music from three of his important groups spanning 40 years.
They’re at the Treelawn Social Club on Waterloo on Thursday August 17, at the BOP STOP on Saturday August 19 and at BLU Jazz+ in Akron on Sunday August 20.
