Ensemble Play Looks Back to the Days of Apartheid

Fri 10/27-Sun 11/12

The Island, written by South African playwrights Athol Fugard, John Kani and Winston Ntshona, debuted in 1973, with the latter two performing the roles of the two men around whom the play revolves.

It takes an unsparing look at the prison system in apartheid South Africa and the lives of two political prisoners whose days are spent in grueling labor and who spend their evenings reading and performing Sophocles’ Antigone. When one of the two friends’ appeal for release is successful, stress lines in their relationship appear.

Ensemble Theatre will be performing the work with Sarah May, a well-known local actor/director who’s previously staged Fugard works at Ensemble, Karamu and Dobama, directing, and Robert Williams and Nnamdi Okpala (pictured), who both have multiple local acting credits including at Ensemble, in the roles of the two imprisoned men.

It runs through Sunday November 11. Get tickets here.
