Cleveland Progressive Soul/Jazz Ensemble Mourning [A]BLKstar Does a Free Concert

Thu 2/16 @ 7PM

Cleveland’s Mourning [A] BLKstar describes itself as “a multi-generational, gender and genre non-conforming amalgam of Black Culture dedicated to servicing the stories and songs of the apocalyptic diaspora.”

Founded in 2015 by writer/activist/musician R.A. Washington, the group has grown from a quartet to an octet, expanding its sonic range, which draws on soul, jazz, blues, electronic music and spoken word to create a nuanced view of Black life in America today and its history. Unique in the local music scene, the group was awarded the Cleveland Arts Prize for music in 2021. It features James Longs, LaToya Kent and Kyle Kidd on vocals, Washington on samplers and bass, Pete Saudek on guitar and keyboards, Theresa May on trumpet, Dante Foley on drums and William Washington on trombone.

Local 4 Music Fund is sponsoring a free show with the group at the Beachland Ballroom. It’s a mostly seated show, so come, listen and learn.
