The streetcar level of the Detroit-Superior Bridge aka Veterans Memorial Bridge, underneath the street level, has been a source of fascination, speculation and proposals for many years. Closed to traffic since the streetcars were eliminated in 1954, you can still see vestiges of the station there.
For many years the bridge was opened to pedestrians for a couple of days over certain holiday weekends, and many people remember fondly the two magical years (2010 and 2011) that the Ingenuity Festival was held on the bridge.
Lately there have once again been conversations about how to turn the space into a civic and economic asset (Remember a few years back when there a was talk of turning it into mini-mall with small shops?) On Friday evening, June 23, people are invited to a “community dialogue” with local leaders to toss around ideas for creating a public space there. Dinner will be available on a first-come/fist-serve basis and they promise, “Feedback and ideas will be used to inform future plans for the bridge.”
Then on Saturday, the gates open at 10am for self-guided tours of the bridge’s underside. There’ll be food trucks, entertainment and educational tables, as well as an additional chance to offer your own ideas. Last admission is 5:30pm.
Both events are free.
