Sat 3/2 @ 8PM
One of the strengths of northeast Ohio jazz scene is that, thanks to its plethora of college and university music programs, it’s teeming with both veteran musicians who teach in those programs and young players emerging from them.
Alto sax player Bobby Selvaggio is one of the more veteran players (although he’s not an oldster by any means, only in his 50s) who directs the jazz studies program at Kent State University where he earned his own bachelors degree in music performance before moving on to New York City to study and perform for a number of years before moving home again. He’s toured extensively and released numerous albums.
At the BOP STOP this weekend, he’ll be joining forces with three of the young guns of the local jazz scene, who comprise the Theron Brown Trio: pianist Brown, who’s based in Akron and teaches at KSU; bassist Jordan McBride, Oberlin Conservatory, class of 2017; and drummer Zaire Darden, Oberlin Conservatory, class of 2015. They’ll be playing original compositions and arrangements of jazz favorites. Get tickets here.
