SHED Projects and SPACES gallery have joined to collaborate on a project that shares with Clevelanders a creative history they’re unlikely to be familiar with: the story of Mexico City’s Linares family and their work in a genre called Cartonería — a complex paper sculpture medium that produces pinatas, Day of the Dead masks and figures, and much more.
As part of a Semana Santa cultural celebration, they’ll present a showing of the 1975 documentary film, Pedro Linares Artesano Cartonero, about Pedro Linares (1906-1992), credited with being the creator of the form, known as Alebrije, a distinctive version of Cartonería.
Post-screening, SHED project founders Gabrielle Banzhaf and Jon Gott and special guests will talk about how this form of Cartonería evolved, and its artistic, cultural and history significance. The event is free; get more information here. The event is free; get more information here.
