Alex Bevan who has been performing since the late ’60s and put out his first album in 1971, is one of the region’s true musical treasures. He began playing a local folk clubs before he was even out of high school and became a northeast Ohio music celebrity with the release of his 1974 album Springboard on his own Fiddler’s Wynde label which featured his best-known song, the humorous “Skinny Little Boy (from Cleveland Ohio).” While he’s no longer a skinny little boy, as he often notes, he’s put out a couple of dozen albums on Fiddler’s Wynde that display the range of his songwriting skills — from humorous tunes to tender love ballads, story songs to ones that express his political and environmental passions. Now in his 70s, he’s still a prolific songwriter, and his warm, clear vocals and skillful guitar playing have only improved.
He performs widely in the area, both as a solo artist and with his wide circle of musician friends. He’ll be doing the later when he performs a Suma Session event at Painesville’s Suma Recording, where music lovers are invited to buy tickets to watch musicians work in the studio. For this session, rather than a full concert, Alex and his friends will be recording and overdubbing four of his tunes, while he shares some of his (always entertaining stories) about his own relationship with the studio, its original owners Ken and Paul Hamann (now both passed away) and how he wrote his 1978 album Grand River Lullaby while living on that property.
He’ll be joined by Michael Stanley Band drummer Tom Dobeck, bassist Leonard DiCosimo, blues guitarist/vocalist Austin Walkin’ Cane and keyboard player Tim Longfellow. Ticket holders will also get a tour of the studio, a post-concert meet-and-greet reception with the artists and studio personnel, and a signed CD of the finished album, as well as a digital download. All ticket proceeds will help fund Alex’s latest project.
