Film Sheds Light on Company That Designed Iconic ’70s Album Covers

Thu 4/10 @ 7PM

The work of London-based design company Hipgnosis was familiar to every rock and roll fan in the 70s, when their instantly recognizable work graced covers of albums by Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, T. Rex, Styx, AC/DC, Bad Company, Genesis, Yes, Electric Light Orchestra and dozens more. Their best-known work was the cover for Pink Floyd’s monstrously popular 1973 album The Dark Side of the Moon; it was also Pink Floyd who launched their career when the band asked them to do a cover for its 1968 album A Saucerful of Secrets.

The 2022 documentary Squaring the Circle (The Story of Hipgnosis) provides the company’s backstory and that of artists Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey “Po” Powell who were its principal creatives. It’s the next film being screened as part of the Rock Hall’s 2025 film series. Art and design lovers as well as music fans will want to see this one. Get tickets here.
