The Musical Theater Project is taking on a huge task with its next presentation called “Legendary Black Singers – Great Broadway Songs (Volume 2).” I mean, how many legendary Black singers are there that have knocked Broadway standards out of the park?
“Our goal is to honor immortal African American vocalists who embraced songs from stage and screen musicals—and in many cases created the definitive recordings,” they share. “Ella Fitzgerald is once again at the top of the list, but there are 15 more hall of famers including Nancy Wilson, Bobby Short, Cab Calloway, Natalie Cole and Sammy Davis Jr.”
They’ve brought on two great Cleveland vocalists do the tribute honors — Evelyn Wright and Nicole Sumlin. And they’ll be backed by the proficient jazzy sounds of the Joe Hunter Trio, as they perform the tunes, along with commentary and historic video clips, for a typical TMTP multi-media show.
The show takes place at Wiley Auditorium in University Heights. Go here for tickets.
