The North Coast Winds was formed in 2013 by five alumni of the Cleveland Institute of Music and since then, has worked tirelessly to spread the gospel of wind instrument music, performing and holding residencies across the country to tell the story of what their instruments can do. In 2015, they started the North Coast Winds Summer Institute to share their enthusiasm with the next generation of musicians and during the pandemic, they did pop-up concerts on people’s lawns to bring music to a culture-starved time.
Its music spans eras and musical genres, embracing noted classical composers and well as contemporary composers, jazz and folk music as well as classical music. That’s reflected in their program for the Rocky River Chamber Music Society, which includes pieces by Vallerie Coleman, Gunther Schuller, Darius Milhaud, Elliot Carter, William Grant Still, George and Ira Gershwin and DuBose Hayward, and Paquito de Rivera.
The ensemble features Kimberly Zaleski on flute, Danna Sundet on oboe, Ben Chen on clarinet, Arleigh Savage on bassoon and Emily Shelley on horn.
The concert, taking place at West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church, is free and open to all. Go here for more information. Go here to watch on YouTube.
