Back in 2021, Cleveland’s venerable Bonfoey Gallery in Playhouse Square, founded in 1893, hosted a show called Nevertheless, She Created, featuring nine women artists active in the local visual arts scene. Its name was a play on the phrase “nevertheless she persisted,” directed at Senator Elizabeth Warren in 2017 by Senate leader Mitch McConnell when, during a confirmation hearing on Senator Jeff Sessions to become attorney general, Warren attempted to read into record a letter written by Coretta Scott King revealing Sessions’ racist actions.
Now the gallery is presenting a second, much larger edition to honor Women’s History Month called Nevertheless, She Created: Encore. It features works by a group of 20th and 21st century women artists in the Northeast Ohio area in a range of mediums including painting, photography, sculpture and printmaking. Nearly three dozen artist are included in the new show.
Several artists from the first show are again featured: Susan Squires, Ryn Clarke and the recently deceased Patricia Zinsmeister Parker. Other notable artists include photographers Linda Butler and Garie Waltzer, both Cleveland Arts Prize winners; drawing/animation artist Amber Kempthorn; painter Dana Oldfather whose solo show opens at Abattoir Gallery this week; sculptor Diane Therese Pinchot; the late figurative painter Phyllis Seltzer known for her vibrant Cleveland cityscapes; and biomorphic sculptor Barbara Stanczak.
Many of the artists will be present at the free, public opening reception on Thursday March 14. The show will be on view through April 26.
