Just in time for the cherry trees to blossom, downtown Akron hosting its Japanese-themed Sakura Festival along the part of the Towpath Trail running through downtown Akron’s Locks 1, 2 and 3.
The event will feature a host of activities, including a pre-festival guided bike ride, story and history walks, art and craft demonstrations, food vendors, sake and sushi tastings, Japanese tea ceremony, and live performances.
Of special interest is the return of Cleveland‘s remarkable Yume Daiko Taiko drumming troupe, which will offer performances throughout the day. Taiko drumming is an historical Japanese art form that has often expressed social movements for minority groups both within and outside of Japan.
The Festival concludes with the Bicentennial Light the Locks event from 8-9pm where participants will be invited to light a lantern at Lock 2 “to remember loved ones, celebrate new beginnings and promote unity.”
The Sakura Festival is free and open to all.
