Go on a Snipe Hunt. There will Be Snipe — We Promise!

Tue 4/1 @ 8:30-10AM

Maybe you remember snipe hunts from camp, where the older campers sent the newbies on a wild goose chase to find something that didn’t exist.

That’s one definition of snipe hunt, but there are also actual snipe which can be found and observed at places such as the Geauga Park District’s Frohring Meadows. And if you’re up for getting up early on a Monday morning and heading over there, you can join a naturalist for a short hike out in the fields to watch the aerial courtship displays of Wilson’s snipe, a small brown shorebird native to this area which climate change is bringing to local breeding grounds earlier than ever.

Wikipedia tells us, “The male performs ‘winnowing’ display during courtship, flying high in circles and then taking shallow dives to produce a distinctive sound. They have been observed ‘winnowing’ throughout the day and long into the night.” If you’d like to see this, come on out! No registration is required.
