We’ve been hearing a lot about immigration — most of it false — since a presidential candidate came down a golden escalator in 2015 and told us that Mexico was “not sending us their best,” sending drug dealers and rapists instead.
Recently, some dishonest politicians have gone on and on about single instances of crimes committed by immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers, with such appalling tactics as calling families of those killed by undocumented immigrants “angel families” as if the far more numerous victims of native-born Americans were less important. The same people have claimed that “illegals” are being showered with government services denied to “our poor veterans,” when undocumented people are ineligible for such services, or that they’re “stealing” all those alluring jobs in meatpacking plants, harvesting crops and washing dishes.
What’s the actual story on undocumented immigrants, according to studies and facts? That’s the topic of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Cleveland’s next edition of “Forums that Matter.” Two speakers will address “Immigration: Net Drain or Net Gain? Effects of Illegal Immigration on America”: attorney Brian Hoffman, Founding Executive Director of the Ohio Center for Strategic Immigration, Litigation & Outreach (OCSILIO); and Anne Hill, president of Americans Making Immigrants Safe (AMIS). Learn why these immigrants come here and what they really do when they get here (mostly work to provide for their families, not murder helpless American maidens.) And they’ll provide actual information on the impact they bring to this country’s economy — and what the impact would be if they were forced to leave.
It’s free and open to people of all faiths — and good faith.
