Mark and Karen Langan opened Mulberry Creek Herb Farm in Huron on land owned by her family three decades ago: when it opens for the season on April 1 it’ll be kicking off its 30th season.
The organic farm offers not only a larger variety of herbs than you’ll find almost anywhere — dozens of basils, more than a dozen each of mint, rosemary and lavender, plus herbs you probably never heard of — it also offers dozens of scented geraniums, perennials, succulents, cacti, miniature “fairy” plants and accessories, dwarf fruit trees, and vegetable starters as well as seeds, pottery, fertilizers and gardening tool. There’s even Mitchell’s ice cream in its fridge. And since last year, it’s had a resident winery, run by the Langans’ son Ben, where you can chill and have a glass of wine once you’ve loaded your flats of plants into your car.
With its meadow, fields, garden and picnic shelter, Mulberry Creek is also a great place to visit, just to hang out — and your dog is welcome too. You can even bring a picnic! (They’ll also have local food trucks every Saturday offering great hot food.)
April is going to be a month of celebrations and activities, kicking off a busy season. There’ll be refreshments on opening day, as well as a pollinator talk. Mark and Karen are always generous with gardening advice and will try to answer any question you have.
