The next offering from Cleveland Public Theatre’s Hispanic ensemble Teatro Publico de Cleveland is a superhero fantasy called El Coquí Espectacular and the Bottle of Doom, written by Brooklyn playwright Matt Barbot. It revolves around a struggling comic book artist named Alex whose adopts the off-hours identity of “El Coquí Espectacular,” a superhero with a mission to save his fellow Puerto Ricans. Meanwhile, his advertising exec brother Joe, who doesn’t speak Spanish, becomes the “voice” of Spanish-speaking people.
The play had its premiere in 2018 and been extensively produced around the country; it even had a workshop in 2016 at Cleveland’s Julia de Burgos Center. With direction by Fabio Polanco, the play will open at CPT Thursday March 20 and run through Saturday April 5.
